Patients that desire a rhinoplasty or “nose job” are typically looking to improve either the aesthetics or function of their nose. Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly requested facial surgery procedures, which means that there is a lot of information available online and in the media for patients to consider. It’s important to get rhinoplasty information from a trusted source, like rhinoplasty specialist Dr. Azizzadeh in order to make the best decision for your personal surgical needs. Dr. Azizzadeh has compiled a list of frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty procedures for patients who are considering surgery, or who just want to learn more.
1. How do I know if I am a good candidate for a nose job?
It’s important to have a consultation with a board certified physician in order to determine if you are a good candidate for a rhinoplasty procedure. If you are a healthy person looking to improve the appearance of your nose, correct a deformity, and/or improve nasal symmetry, you may be a good candidate. During the consultation, Dr. Azizzadeh will examine your nose and spend time getting to know you and discussing your rhinoplasty goals. He will ultimately make sure that you are a good candidate physically, anatomically and emotionally
2. What should I expect for recovery from a rhinoplasty?
Immediately after having a rhinoplasty, some discomfort can be expected, but it should be manageable. Dr. Azizzadeh sees all of his rhinoplasty patients the day after surgery for their first post-op appointment. During this time, he checks on how the nose is beginning to heal and makes sure that the patient is comfortable. During the first week after surgery, patients have a cast and sutures on their nose. Patients can experience swelling and bruising that should start to go down within 7-10 days after surgery. A cold compress can be used to treat the swelling for the first 3 days, and then substituted with a warm compress after that to minimize any brusing. At their one week post-op appointment, Dr. Azizzadeh removes the cast and sutures. Patients generally get back into their normal routine around this time, aside from exercise which needs to be put on hold for 3 weeks.
3. When will I see the final results of my nose job?
Although patients make progress healing each week after surgery, full rhinoplasty recovery requires patience. The external swelling resolves first, however there is internal swelling that takes much longer (from 1-2 years after surgery) to completely subside. That’s not to say that you won’t be able to enjoy the results of your rhinoplasty much sooner, but it takes time for your entire nose to be healed from the inside out.
