Rhinoplasty
A Rhinoplasty (nose job) improves the appearance and/or breathing function of your nose.
What Is A Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)?
A Rhinoplasty (nose job) improves the appearance and/or breathing function of your nose. The nose’s central position on the face makes it a focal point, where its shape and proportion significantly influence overall facial harmony, aesthetics, and attractiveness. The most common reasons for undergoing rhinoplasty include addressing personal cosmetic concerns, and congenital deformities, correcting trauma-related injuries, revising the results of prior nasal surgeries, and improving breathing.
What Concerns Does A Rhinoplasty Address?
- The overall appearance of the nose
- Bulbous, Drooping, or Pinched tip
- Dorsal hump (bump on the bridge)
- Shallow and depressed bridge (saddle nose deformity)
- Prominent or flaring nostrils
- Nasal breathing
- Aging appearance of the nose
- Poor nasal proportions
- Crooked nose
- Disharmony and poor shape of the nose
- Irregularities
- Deviated septum

Dr. A's Insider Tips
“Rhinoplasty is generally safe for teenagers once they have completed puberty and facial growth has stabilized, typically around 15-18 years for girls and 17-19 years for boys. “
Rhinoplasty
Non-Surgical Alternatives
Liquid or non-surgical rhinoplasty involves injectable fillers, such as hyaluronic acid-based products like Juvederm or Restylane, to temporarily reshape the nose. This procedure is popular for minor adjustments, such as smoothing bumps or enhancing the nasal tip, without surgery. However, non-surgical rhinoplasty requires the same aesthetic considerations and understanding of the anatomy as surgical rhinoplasty in order to achieve beautiful results.
Additionally, injecting fillers in and around the nose carries higher risks compared to other facial areas, including the rare but serious complications of necrosis (tissue death) and blindness, which can occur if the filler is inadvertently injected into or compresses blood vessels. These risks underscore the importance of choosing an experienced and skilled practitioner for the procedure.
Types of Rhinoplasty
Preservation rhinoplasty is an advanced technique that addresses the dorsal hump by reshaping it from the septum, rather than directly manipulating the top of the bone and cartilage. This method preserves the integrity of the skin and the bone-cartilage framework, thereby minimizing the risk of skin irregularities and cartilage collapse. Consequently, patients often experience a shorter recovery time. By maintaining key nasal structures, preservation rhinoplasty theoretically reduces the risk of complications while enhancing aesthetic outcomes, particularly when viewed from the front. However, this technique is technically challenging, requires specialized equipment like Piezo, and may occasionally result in a residual bump that necessitates further refinement. For patients who require only tip refinement, Dr. Azizzadeh has developed a specialized preservation technique known as “Limited Dissection External Rhinoplasty.” This minimally invasive approach involves lifting only the skin of the tip region without disturbing the bridge skin, allowing for precise tip modifications with minimal disruption to the surrounding nasal bone and bridge cartilage
Revision rhinoplasty presents unique challenges due to the altered and often scarred tissue from the initial surgery, which can complicate the surgical approach and limit available options. Achieving a balanced and natural outcome often requires advanced techniques and careful planning, as the underlying nasal structure may have been compromised. Additionally, the patient’s expectations and emotional considerations are crucial, as they are often seeking correction for unsatisfactory results from a previous surgery. For a more in-depth exploration of these challenges and how they are addressed, please refer to the Revision Rhinoplasty section.
Technological advances have revolutionized the field of rhinoplasty, offering patients more precise, natural-looking results. 3D imaging and morphing software allows surgeons to visualize the patient’s facial structure and simulate various nose shapes, aiding in surgical planning and patient expectations. Computer-assisted rhinoplasty utilizes advanced software to guide the surgeon during the procedure, ensuring greater accuracy and reducing the risk of complications. Additionally, the use of piezoelectric surgery, which employs ultrasonic vibrations, offers a less invasive and more precise approach to reshaping the nasal bone and cartilage. These advancements have made rhinoplasty a safer and more effective procedure, allowing patients to achieve their desired aesthetic goals with greater confidence.
The term “ethnic rhinoplasty” traditionally refers to nose surgeries for non-Caucasian individuals, but as society has become more diverse and our understanding of facial aesthetics has evolved, the focus has shifted from ethnicity alone to a more personalized approach. Dr. Azizzadeh rejects the notion of categorizing patients based solely on their ethnicity when performing rhinoplasty. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of achieving a harmonious and authentic outcome, understanding that nasal features vary widely within every ethnic group and that a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective. His approach in modern rhinoplasty views the nose in relation to the entire face, ensuring it blends seamlessly with other features like the eyelids, cheeks, lips, and forehead, all while aligning with the patient’s unique goals.
Today, many patients seek to preserve their ethnic identity through plastic surgery, and Dr. Azizzadeh is committed to helping you achieve natural, aesthetic results that honor and enhance your individuality. Specializing in rhinoplasty for various ethnic populations, Dr. Azizzadeh understands the critical importance of listening to his patients, crafting a surgical plan that aligns with your goals while also setting realistic expectations based on your anatomy. Although not without its limitations, 3D imaging and morphing software is an invaluable tool, particularly for individuals who are concerned about preserving their ethnic features or personal identity through rhinoplasty. It plays a crucial role in the preoperative discussions with Dr. Azizzadeh, allowing patients to visualize potential outcomes and engage in a more informed and reassuring dialogue about their goals and concerns. His approach prioritizes both artistry and technical precision, ensuring that every result is as unique as the individual themselves.
Dr. Azizzadeh understands that within the Middle Eastern community, nasal features can vary widely, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. His approach to rhinoplasty is to view the nose as part of the entire facial structure, ensuring it harmonizes with other features like the eyelids, cheeks, lips, and forehead. This holistic perspective allows him to tailor each procedure to meet the individual goals of his Middle Eastern patients, achieving results that are both natural and aesthetically balanced.
Dr. Azizzadeh is deeply committed to educating both his patients and fellow surgeons about the diversity of nasal features among individuals of Asian descent and across all ethnicities. He emphasizes that each patient’s unique facial structure necessitates a personalized approach to rhinoplasty, rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. His philosophy is grounded in the belief that the nose should be viewed within the broader context of the entire face, ensuring that it complements and enhances other key features such as the eyelids, cheeks, lips, and forehead.
For some patients, achieving this balance may involve subtle enhancements, such as augmenting the nasal bridge or refining the tip and nostrils to better align with their facial proportions and aesthetic goals. However, every procedure Dr. Azizzadeh performs is meticulously customized, taking into account the individual’s specific desires and the natural contours of their face. This tailored approach aims to achieve results that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also appear natural and harmonious with the rest of the face.
When augmenting a shallow nasal bridge, Dr. Azizzadeh prefers to use the patient’s own cartilage, typically harvested from the rib or septum, rather than synthetic implants like silicone. This preference is driven by his commitment to minimizing the risk of long-term complications such as infection or implant rejection. By using the patient’s own tissue, Dr. Azizzadeh ensures that the results are not only more natural in appearance but also more durable and less prone to complications that can arise from foreign materials.
Dr. Azizzadeh strongly advocates that rhinoplasty should never be approached with a one-size-fits-all mindset, especially given the rich diversity of nasal features among patients of African descent and people of color. He consistently educates both his patients and fellow surgeons on the importance of recognizing and respecting these differences, emphasizing that successful rhinoplasty requires a deep understanding of each patient’s unique facial structure and aesthetic goals.
The nose should never be treated in isolation but rather as a central feature that must harmonize with the rest of the face. For some patients, this may involve subtle enhancements like augmenting the nasal bridge or refining the tip to create a more balanced and cohesive facial appearance. For others, it may be narrowing the nostrils and increasing the projection of the nose. Regardless, Dr. Azizzadeh tailors every procedure to the individual, meticulously planning each step to ensure that the final outcome aligns with the patient’s specific desires and unique facial anatomy.
Beyond the aesthetic considerations, there are critical surgical considerations that make significant long-term impact. For example, when addressing a shallow nasal bridge, Dr. Azizzadeh often opts to use the patient’s own cartilage, typically sourced from the rib or septum, rather than synthetic implants like silicone. This preference is not only driven by his commitment to achieving natural-looking results but also by his dedication to minimizing the risk of long-term complications. Using autologous cartilage significantly reduces the likelihood of infection, extrusion, or other issues that can arise with synthetic materials, ensuring that the results are both aesthetically pleasing and durable over time. Furthermore, structure support is critical to avoid long-term loss of nasal support.
Dr. Azizzadeh’s focus on personalized care extends beyond the surgical procedure itself. He spends considerable time during consultations to understand his patients’ goals, educate them on available options, and set realistic expectations. He believes that informed patients are empowered to make the best decisions for their health and appearance, and he is committed to providing them with the highest level of care throughout their rhinoplasty journey. By approaching each case with a deep respect for the patient’s individuality and a commitment to excellence, Dr. Azizzadeh consistently achieves outcomes that are not only beautiful but also deeply satisfying to his patients.
When considering rhinoplasty for Hispanic patients, it is essential to recognize the tremendous diversity within this group. Hispanic patients come from a wide range of backgrounds, including Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian ancestries, each with unique nasal characteristics and facial structures. This diversity necessitates a personalized approach to rhinoplasty, where the surgeon carefully evaluates the individual’s facial harmony and tailors the procedure to meet their specific aesthetic goals. Dr. Azizzadeh emphasizes viewing the nose not in isolation but as a central feature that should seamlessly integrate with the eyelids, cheeks, lips, and forehead to create a balanced and harmonious facial appearance.
For some Hispanic patients, rhinoplasty might involve reducing a prominent dorsal hump, while for others, it may focus on narrowing the nasal tip or increasing its projection to achieve a more refined profile. The diversity in skin types among Hispanic patients also plays a critical role in rhinoplasty planning. Thicker skin, for example, may require different techniques to ensure optimal definition and contouring of the nose. Dr. Azizzadeh strongly advocates for using the patient’s own cartilage, typically harvested from the septum or rib, rather than synthetic implants; as this approach minimizes the risk of complications and provides a more natural and durable outcome. By taking these personalized considerations into account, Dr. Azizzadeh ensures that each rhinoplasty procedure is tailored to enhance the patient’s unique features while maintaining the integrity of their ethnic identity.
FAQ
It’s normal to have questions before a procedure. If you have additional questions or concerns, book a consultation today.
The initial recovery period following rhinoplasty typically lasts one to two weeks. During this time, you may need to take seven to ten days off work, depending on the extent of bruising and swelling. A splint will be placed on your nose immediately after surgery and will be removed one week later. In most cases, the dreaded “nasal packing” is not required, and in fact Dr. Azizzadeh may use a nasal device to facilitate better breathing during the first week of recovery.
Rhinoplasty is a long-term commitment that involves ongoing care and routine follow-ups. While initial improvements will be visible after the swelling subsides, the full results of the surgery may take one to three years to fully manifest as the healing process completes. Dr. Azizzadeh prioritizes staying connected with his patients throughout this journey, scheduling follow-up visits every three months during the first year and annually thereafter to ensure your progress is on track and to address any concerns as you heal.
Rhinoplasty is typically performed under anesthesia so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. After surgery, it’s normal to experience discomfort, but these symptoms usually are well managed with around the clock acetaminophen and pain medications as needed. Dr. Azizzadeh is all about making your recovery as easy as possible. He and his team will be available to help you get through your rhinoplasty journey in the best way possible. He’ll also give you clear instructions on how to take care of yourself at home. Regular follow-up appointments help keep your recovery on track. Dr. Azizzadeh will check in on your progress, adjust any pain management if needed, and make sure you’re healing comfortably.
Your recovery after rhinoplasty will unfold over several months, with different stages of healing along the way. During the first 7-10 days, which is the acute recovery phase, you’ll notice the most significant swelling and bruising, but most patients are ready to return to work or school after this period. Over the next few weeks, your swelling will gradually reduce, with most of it resolving by 6-12 weeks. You’ll likely be able to resume exercise after 3-4 weeks. By around the 6-week mark, your bones and cartilage will stabilize, though subtle swelling and refinements, especially in the nasal tip and midportion of the nose, might persist for many months. Your nose will continue to refine and settle into its final shape over the next 1 to 2 years, with full results usually visible around 2 to 3 years after surgery. While complete healing takes time, you’ll likely see significant improvements and return to most of your normal activities within the first 1-2 months. Keep in mind that your exact recovery timeline may vary based on the extent of your surgery, skin thickness, complexity of the procedure, your internal healing process, and how closely you follow post-operative care instructions.
Yes, you can have a virtual evaluation as an initial step to determine if you are a candidate for rhinoplasty. This option offers several advantages, including the convenience of discussing your concerns and goals from the comfort of your home, which can save you time and travel. It also makes the consultation process more accessible, particularly for those who live far from Beverly Hills (California), allowing you to receive an initial assessment without the need for immediate travel. Additionally, a virtual evaluation provides preliminary feedback on whether you might be a good candidate for the procedure, helping you make informed decisions before scheduling an in-person consultation.
However, there are some limitations to consider. A virtual evaluation cannot replace the importance of a physical examination, which is crucial for a comprehensive assessment of your nasal structure. Specifically, Dr. Azizzadeh cannot evaluate your internal nasal structures, such as a deviated septum or turbinates. These aspects of your anatomy will need to be thoroughly examined and finalized during the full in-office and preoperative evaluation. There is also the potential for miscommunication, as some nuances of your concerns or the surgeon’s recommendations may not be fully conveyed or understood in a virtual setting. Ultimately, while a virtual inquiry can be a helpful first step in preparation for an in-person consultation.
Rhinoplasty can help improve breathing, particularly when it addresses structural issues such as a deviated septum, nasal valve collapse (both internal and external), and enlarged turbinates. By correcting these structural problems, rhinoplasty can enhance airflow through the nasal passages, making breathing easier and more efficient. For example, a deviated septum can be straightened, nasal valves can be reconstructed to prevent collapse, and turbinate reduction can create more space within the nasal cavity.
However, it’s important to note that there are limitations to the improvements rhinoplasty can offer. The perception of breathing is often subjective, and factors such as how the brain interprets airflow can vary from person to person. Additionally, rhinoplasty may not address other underlying causes of breathing difficulties, such as allergies or chronic sinus issues, which are unrelated to the nasal structure. Therefore, while rhinoplasty can significantly enhance breathing by correcting specific anatomical issues, it may not resolve all aspects of breathing difficulties.
Rhinoplasty is generally considered a very safe procedure, especially when performed on healthy individuals who have undergone a thorough preoperative health clearance by their primary doctor. The safety of the procedure is further ensured by the involvement of a skilled anesthesiologist who plays a critical role in protecting the airway during general anesthesia, thereby minimizing the risks of complications such as aspiration and laryngospasm.
While rhinoplasty is safe, it’s important to be aware of potential risks, which are generally low but can include unsatisfactory aesthetic outcomes, infection, irregularities in the nasal structure, persistent or worsening breathing issues, and in rare cases, septal perforation. Additionally, some patients may require revision surgery to address any issues that arise postoperatively. However, with proper planning, a qualified surgeon, and appropriate postoperative care, the likelihood of serious complications is minimal.
Dr. Azizzadeh takes every precaution to ensure that each rhinoplasty patient achieves the best possible results. He carefully evaluates the risks and benefits before proceeding with surgery and will not move forward if the risks outweigh the potential benefits. In such cases, Dr. Azizzadeh may recommend alternative treatment options better suited to the patient’s needs.
To ensure that patients are fully informed, Dr. Azizzadeh thoroughly explains the benefits and risks associated with rhinoplasty, detailing the surgical process and the recovery period. He is also committed to addressing any concerns or questions patients may have, ensuring they feel confident and well-prepared throughout their treatment journey.
Before undergoing a nose procedure, there are several important factors to consider to ensure you are fully prepared for both the surgery and the recovery process. One critical consideration is downtime. Recovery from a nose procedure typically requires patients to take time off from work, school, or other daily activities. Most patients should plan to avoid these activities for at least a few weeks, as the initial healing process can involve swelling, bruising, and discomfort. It’s essential to arrange your schedule accordingly and ensure you have the necessary support during your recovery period.
Another important factor is the risk associated with the procedure. While rhinoplasty is generally safe, it is still a surgical procedure, and there are potential risks that need to be carefully evaluated. These risks can include infection, irregularities in the nasal structure, breathing difficulties, and, in some cases, the need for revision surgery. Understanding these risks and discussing them with your surgeon is crucial for making an informed decision.
Beyond the physical aspects, the emotional readiness for surgery is equally important. Some patients may struggle with the emotional impact of undergoing surgery, particularly if they are highly sensitive to changes in their appearance. Others who are very detail-oriented may find it challenging to accept that even in the hands of the most skilled surgeons, rhinoplasty can have imperfections. There are also risks of unsatisfactory functional and aesthetic outcomes regardless. For individuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) or those who are extremely fixated on perceived flaws, rhinoplasty may not be advisable, as it could exacerbate emotional distress and dissatisfaction.
Dr. Azizzadeh addresses all these factors in detail during the patient consultation process. He takes the time to thoroughly explain the procedure, respond to any concerns or questions, and provide the information necessary for patients to make an informed and confident decision about their treatment, considering both physical and emotional factors.
Rib cartilage may be necessary for your rhinoplasty procedure when there isn’t enough septal cartilage available to achieve the desired structural support or aesthetic result. This is often the case in revision rhinoplasty, where previous surgeries have depleted the available septal cartilage, or in primary rhinoplasty for individuals who require significant structural enhancement, such as building up the nasal bridge. This approach is sometimes particularly needed in rhinoplasty for individuals of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent, where the dorsum may need to be built up, and nasal structure may require additional support to achieve the desired outcome.
Using rib cartilage provides a robust and abundant source of cartilage, which is ideal for significant structural grafting. It allows Dr. Azizzadeh to create a strong and durable framework, particularly useful in cases where a substantial amount of cartilage is needed. However, harvesting rib cartilage involves a separate incision and can lead to a slightly longer recovery time. There’s also a risk of pneumothorax and discomfort at the donor site. Cadaveric rib cartilage (donor cartilage) is another option, offering the benefits of rib cartilage without the need for an additional surgical site. It can be advantageous in reducing patient discomfort and recovery time. Dr. Azizzadeh will give you his recommendation on what source is better depending on your specific needs.
In contrast, ear cartilage is easier to harvest than rib. However, it is less robust and may not provide sufficient support for major structural work. Synthetic materials offer an alternative when natural cartilage is insufficient. These materials do not require harvesting from the patient’s body, avoiding additional surgical sites. However, synthetic implants carry a higher risk of infection, extrusion, and potential long-term complications compared to natural cartilage.
Ultimately, the choice of cartilage – whether rib, ear, or synthetic – depends on the specific needs of the surgery and your anatomy and goals. Dr. Azizzadeh carefully evaluates these factors and discusses the best approach with each patient to ensure optimal results.
Yes, you can have sinus surgery or septoplasty at the same time as rhinoplasty, and it is often beneficial to combine these procedures. Performing sinus surgery or septoplasty concurrently with rhinoplasty allows Dr. Azizzadeh to address both functional issues, such as breathing difficulties or chronic sinus problems, and aesthetic concerns in a single operation. This approach can reduce overall recovery time and the need for multiple surgeries. Additionally, because septal cartilage is often needed for rhinoplasty to provide structural support, it’s important not to have a septoplasty before rhinoplasty, as this could deplete the cartilage needed for the procedure and necessitate the use of rib grafting or other alternatives. A thorough consultation with your surgeon will help determine the best approach for your needs. Although Dr. Azizzadeh is an expert in both septoplasty and rhinoplasty, he does not perform sinus surgery himself. However, he can collaborate seamlessly with an ENT surgeon to perform both procedures simultaneously, ensuring comprehensive care and optimal outcomes for patients.
Fascia is a thin layer of connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, nerves, and blood vessels throughout the body. In rhinoplasty, some surgeons use fascia, often harvested from areas like the temporalis muscle (near the temple), to provide additional support, smooth out irregularities, or add subtle volume to the nasal structure. Fascia is particularly useful in creating a natural, seamless contour, and it integrates well with the body’s tissues, reducing the risk of complications. Its use can be especially beneficial in revision rhinoplasty or cases where more delicate adjustments are needed to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome.
Preparation
For the best results and swiftest recovery, we recommend the following leading up to your procedure.
Preparing for rhinoplasty involves several essential phases to ensure optimal surgical outcomes and a smooth recovery. However, it is important to remember that every patient is managed uniquely, and protocols may differ between surgeons. Consult with Dr. Azizzadeh and his team for a personalized preparation and care plan tailored to your needs.
Discontinue smoking, vaping, and using nicotine products, as these can negatively affect healing and surgical results. If you have planned laser treatments, begin appropriate skincare preparation. Schedule a pre-operative medical appointment with your primary care physician to assess your overall health. Focus on maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and exercising regularly. Additionally, make arrangements for time off work and plan for any necessary post-operative care. Ask Dr. Azizzadeh about discontinuing non-surgical procedures such as botulinum toxin, fillers, biostimulators, and lasers.
Obtain any necessary pre-operative medical clearance and tests, such as bloodwork (e.g., complete blood count and coagulation profile), and an EKG or chest X-ray if needed based on age or medical history. Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, and certain herbal supplements that can increase bleeding risk. This is also a good time to handle personal grooming, such as scheduling hair appointments, since certain activities may be limited post-surgery.
Attend a pre-operative consultation with Dr. Azizzadeh to discuss your surgical plan, expected outcomes, and any potential risks. During this visit, you will sign informed consent forms and receive detailed instructions for pre- and post-operative care. Be sure to stock up on post-operative supplies, including ice packs, prescribed medications, and comfortable pillows to assist with head elevation during recovery. Make arrangements for a responsible adult to drive you home and assist you for at least 24-72 hours following surgery. If you are undergoing revision rhinoplasty, Dr. Azizzadeh may recommend starting antibiotic ointments in nostrils and nose a few days prior to surgery.
On the night before your surgery, avoid eating or drinking after midnight if general anesthesia is to be used. Practice relaxation techniques to ease any pre-surgery anxiety and aim for a full night’s rest. If prescribed, take any anti-nausea medication as directed. On the morning of surgery, shower with antibacterial soap (if instructed), and do not apply any makeup, lotions, or skincare products. Wear loose-fitting clothing that buttons or zips in the front and follow any specific instructions regarding preoperative medications. Arrive at the surgical facility at the designated time, usually 1 to 1.5 hours before your procedure.
Approaching your rhinoplasty with the right mindset can positively influence your experience and outcomes. Feeling nervous before surgery is normal, but focusing on positive thinking, visualization, and relaxation can help reduce anxiety and set you up for success. Practices such as guided imagery, meditation, and mindfulness have been shown to decrease stress, enhance recovery, and improve overall patient satisfaction. Discuss any mental preparation techniques that resonate with you with Dr. Azizzadeh and his team to incorporate them into your care plan.
Adhering to these preparation phases can optimize your readiness for rhinoplasty, potentially improving your surgical outcomes and recovery experience. Always work closely with Dr. Azizzadeh and his team for a personalized and comprehensive approach to your care.
Recovery
Recovery from rhinoplasty can be divided into several distinct phases:
During this initial phase, swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are most prominent but will gradually subside. You may experience some discomfort, nasal congestion, and temporary changes in sensation, such as numbness or tingling around the nose. Rest is crucial, but gentle activities, like short walks, can promote circulation and aid in recovery. By the end of this period, many patients can resume light daily activities and return to work, although strenuous activities should still be avoided.
Swelling and bruising continue to diminish, and you may feel more comfortable engaging in social activities as your appearance becomes more natural. Some residual swelling, particularly at the tip of the nose, may persist but is usually subtle. Most patients can gradually resume normal exercise and more strenuous activities around the three-week mark, as directed by their surgeon.
The majority of the swelling should resolve during this period, and the nose will begin to settle into its more refined shape. You may notice continued subtle changes as the nose heals. Any lingering numbness or tightness around the nose typically improves as the healing process progresses.
Full healing and final results from rhinoplasty can take up to one to two years. During this time, any remaining swelling, particularly at the nasal tip, will subside, and the nose will achieve its final contour and definition. Consistent follow-up with your surgeon is important to monitor your progress and address any questions or concerns throughout the recovery process, as individual healing can vary.
Adhering to your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions is key to ensuring the best possible outcome and long-lasting results. Patience is essential, as the recovery process and subtle changes take time to fully unfold.
Dr. Azizzadeh generally recommends the following post-operative rhinoplasty guidelines after your rhinoplasty procedure. :.
Medications and Supplements: To ensure optimal healing and reduce the risk of complications, avoid blood thinners and certain medications for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after surgery. These include Aspirin, NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen, Advil, and Naprosyn), fish oil, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Additionally, refrain from smoking, vaping, all nicotine products, cannabis/marijuana, and illicit drugs during this period. Discuss critical medications with your primary doctor and Dr. Azizzadeh.
Pain management: We will recommend Tylenol (acetaminophen) around the clock for your pain management after rhinoplasty. You should not exceed 3 grams in a 24-hour period. Additional prescription medications will be prescribed to be taken as needed.
Swelling and Bruising: In the first 72 hours after surgery, use cold compresses for 20 minutes per hour while awake to reduce swelling and bruising. After this initial period, switch to warm compresses applied for 20 minutes, three times a day, to help alleviate bruising and promote healing. Additionally, you will be given arnica and bromelain to help reduce swelling and bruising. Arnica is a natural remedy known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapples, helps decrease swelling and bruising. At the time of surgery, you will also receive a dose of steroids to minimize swelling. In some cases, a short course of steroids may be prescribed after surgery to manage excessive swelling. This regimen helps manage discomfort and accelerates the recovery process.
Nausea and Diet: With modern anesthesia methods and our special protocol, post-operative nausea is much less common and very manageable. During surgery, your anesthesiologist will administer intravenous anti-nausea medications and specialized anesthetics that limit gastrointestinal issues. Additionally, you will be prescribed Emend™ to take three hours before surgery to prevent nausea and Ondansetron (Zofran®) for breakthrough discomfort. Avoid complex or heavy foods 24 to 48 hours after surgery. Consume clear liquids and bland, easy-to-digest foods such as broth, plain toast, or crackers. Gradually reintroduce solid foods to ease digestion and minimize discomfort. Hydration is crucial in the post-operative period. If submandibular gland modifications are performed, follow a bland diet, avoid spices, and opt for soft foods to minimize discomfort and swelling in the neck area.
Incision Care: In the first week, gently clean your rhinoplasty incisions with half water and half hydrogen peroxide once a day for the first 7 days. After cleaning, apply an antibiotic ointment, such as Neosporin or Mupirocin, over all incisions three times daily to prevent infection and promote healing. After the first week, discontinue hydrogen peroxide and antibiotic ointment. Steri-strips or silicone gel will be recommended to support further healing. For areas with crusting, applying Vaseline can keep the skin moist.
Head position: Keep the head neutral and elevated for at least one week following surgery. This includes any time a patient sleeps, rests, or relaxes.
Exercise: You can start taking short walks the first week after surgery and gradually increase your activities. You may perform strenuous activities three to four weeks after surgery. They should receive clearance from Dr. Azizzadeh before resuming any strenuous activities.
Additional Support: You may consider post-surgical aftercare with skilled nurses, ensuring you receive the highest level of attention and support during your recovery. These facilities help you have a smooth and stress-free post-operative period, allowing for optimal healing and peace of mind. Additionally, incorporating hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as part of your post-operative care can further enhance your recovery. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy delivers concentrated oxygen in a pressurized chamber, promoting accelerated healing by increasing oxygen supply to tissues, reducing swelling and inflammation, and improving collagen synthesis. Research has shown that HBOT can aid in reducing postoperative complications, enhancing wound healing, and minimizing scarring, making it a beneficial option for many patients undergoing facial and neck procedures. Discuss with Dr. Azizzadeh and his team whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy is appropriate for your specific post-operative care plan.
Post-Surgery Warning signs: After a rhinoplasty procedure, it is essential to monitor your recovery closely and contact your doctor if you experience any concerning symptoms. Warning signs include change in vision, pressure in eye socket, sudden or severe swelling, bruising that worsens instead of improving, intense pain unrelieved by prescribed medications, or any signs of infection such as fever, redness, warmth, or purulent drainage. Additionally, difficulty breathing, chest pain, or numbness or weakness in the face or neck should be reported immediately, as these may indicate complications. Prompt communication with your healthcare provider can ensure timely intervention and a smooth recovery process if you are coming from out of town.
Healing can vary from person to person, and some individuals may experience a longer recovery period.
